North Stonington, Conn.—The Binghamton University golf team wrapped up their opening round at the America Sky Championship with a score of 313 (+25), good for fourth place at day’s end. The tournament favorites Sacramento State fired an opening round 290 (+2) and sit in the clubhouse as team leaders.
The Bearcats received strong play from both their fifth year seniors, starting with local Union-Endicott product Trevor Fiedler. Fiedler opened up with a team-best score of 75 (+3), registering a steady opening round complete with 12 pars. He birdied a pair of par fives on the afternoon and was strong on the back-nine shooting a one-over par 37. After first round play, Fiedler is tied for seventh.
Fellow senior Mike Surdey had an up-and-down day, but was solid down the stretch shooting a four-over par 76. Surdey (T-10) had a troublesome front-nine 40 (+4), but really got things going after a double bogey at the 11th with birdies on three of the next four holes. He wrapped up the round with three consecutive pars, shooting an even par back-nine.
Sophomores Bryce Edmister and Paul Andrews rounded up the team scoring for Binghamton with rounds of 80 and 82 respectively. Binghamton will head back out to the Troon Golf Course for their second round tomorrow morning. The Bearcats will tee off in the five last groups beginning at 10 a.m.
