The Binghamton University golf team tees it up at the Rutherford Intercollegiate beginning on Saturday, April 20. BU is fresh off their second win of the season at the Mount St. Mary’s Invite on Tuesday. The Bearcats will play 36 holes Saturday and wrap up play on Sunday at the Penn State Blue Course on the campus of Penn State University. The Nittany Lions are hosting the 14-team event, which includes 2012 champion Bowling Green—who Binghamton bested on Tuesday by three strokes to take the team crown.
“We are really looking forward to competing well against some good quality teams this weekend,” head coach Bernie Herceg said. “I’m confident we can carry over some of the momentum from our last event and have solid consistent rounds. This is our final event before conferences, so this should be a good barometer of what we need to work on to prepare us for the best finish possible.”
Binghamton shot a season-low 54 hole total of 877 (+13) at the Mount St. Mary’s Invite earlier this week. All five BU competitors placed in the top-20 individually, led by sophomore Jack Sedgewick. Sedgewick shot a 217 (+1) on his way to a third place finish. In his opening round, he fired a career-best 69 (-3) birdying four of his last eight holes. Senior David Cellura also had a steady three rounds, finishing in fourth place out of 63 individuals. With a 54-hole total of 218 (+2), Cellura buried a team-high 40 pars over a two-day stretch.
In nine tournaments this season, BU carries a team average of 300.1. If the season ended today, they would have the fourth lowest team average in school history. Junior Bryce Edmister continues to lead the team in scoring average at 74.8 and has placed in the top-20 in six events this season (four top-10 finishes). Freshman Jesse Perkins has been Binghamton’s top performer this spring with a pair of top-20 finishes, including a career-best sixth place finish on Tuesday. Perkins fired a second round 69 (-3) at Quail Valley and in three events has a team-low 75.3 scoring average.
This marks the third time Binghamton has competed in the Rurtherford Intercollegiate and the first time since 2011 when they finished sixth out of 16 teams. ’11 graduate Jake Katz finished runner-up in the tournament, recording one of his 11 2nd place finishes on his historic career. Cellura finished T-33 in 2011 with a score of 230 (+17).
