Holmes named to America East Preseason All-Conference Team

WEST HARTFORD, Conn.—For the second consecutive season, senior point guard Andrea Holmes has been selected to the America East Women’s Basketball Preseason All-Conference Team. The announcement was made as part of the conference’s annual basketball preseason media day, which was held on Thursday afternoon at the Connecticut State Capitol in downtown Hartford. Also announced at the event were the preseason polls, in which the Binghamton women’s team was picked to finish fourth in the America East while the Bearcat men’s squad was chosen to come in ninth. All of the voting was done by the conference’s head coaches.

Holmes was named first-team all-conference as a junior. She ranked fourth in the America East with 14.3 points per game and was named the conference’s Player of the Week twice during the season.  Entering her senior season, Holmes is ranked 10th all time in program history with 1,109 career points. In each of her first three seasons, Holmes was been named all-conference. As a sophomore, she earned second-team all-conference accolades and as a freshman, she was both third-team all-conference as well as the America East Rookie of the Year. She joins Rachel Laws (2002-06) as the only Bearcat player ever to be named preseason all-conference twice during her career.

“We are excited that Andrea has been recognized again by the head coaches in the conference,” head coach Nicole Scholl said. “She has continued to improve each season, especially as a leader out on the court.”

In the preseason poll, the BU women’s squad was picked fourth behind UMBC, Boston and Hartford. The Bearcats return four starters, including Holmes, senior forward Viive Rebane, junior forward Kara Elofson and sophomore guard Jasbriell Swain. Rebane earned second team all-conference honors last season while Swain was the America East Rookie of the Year.

On the men’s side, Binghamton returns enior center Kyrie Sutton, who ranked sixth in the conference last year in blocks per game. Junior guard Jimmy Gray is the team’s top returning scorer.

The BU women open up the 2011-12 season at home against Mt. St. Mary’s on Friday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. One night later, the Bearcat men host Colgate at 7 p.m. in their first game of the year.
