VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton women’s lacrosse team along with Lauren Lukefahr and Lauren Scott were honored by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) for outstanding performances in the classroom. As a unit Binghamton received the 2011 IWLCA Honor Squad Award, while Lukefahr and Scott were named to the academic honor roll.
“I’m extremely proud of both (Lukefahr/Scott) of their accomplishments and our continued team success of making the team honor roll,” said head coach Tony Zostant.
The IWLCA honored 187 student-athletes from 65 different institutions for their academic excellence. All student-athletes were nominated by their schools, achieved at least junior status academically and a GPA of 3.20 or higher. The 56 Division I women’s lacrosse programs that earned Academic Squad honors posted a collective GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The Bearcats were one of two America East teams honored by the IWLCA. Joining Binghamton on the list was Boston University. Following the 2011 season Zostant’s team garnered the top GPA in the America East to add to their list of academic accolades. Scott and Lukefahr were two of the six America East student-athletes named to the honor roll, with Boston University and UMBC also placing two players on the list.
Scott graduated with a degree in management and leadership this past May. The Bearcats only goalie in 2011, Scott played every minute of BU’s 17 games and led the America East with 9.41 saves per game. In her four years at BU Scott clocked over 2,000 minutes in net, the most ever in the program’s ten year history. Scott was also named to the America East All-Academic Team in 2011 and was named to the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the third consecutive school year.
Lukefahr, an environment studies major, was named to the America East all-conference second team in 2011. The junior defender ranked second on the team in draw controls and averaged 1.24 caused turnovers per game, sixth in the conference. In addition to being named to the IWLCA Honor Roll, Lukefahr earned America East Honor Roll recognition.
The recognition marks the fifth time the women’s lacrosse team has made the list and the first since 2008. The Bearcats have placed a pair of student-athletes on the IWLCA honor roll for the fifth time with Scott earning her second straight nomination. This past spring the 13 women’s lacrosse players were named to the America East Honor Roll.
NOTES: A total of ten Bearcats have been named to the IWLCA Honor Roll since 2005… Last season Erika Travis was named to the list, along with Scott… The 2011 squad is Zostant’s second team to achieve IWLCA Honor Squad recognition while at Binghamton.
