Libby McGovern named Binghamton women’s tennis head coach

VESTAL, N.Y.—The Binghamton athletic department has announced the hiring of Libby McGovern as its new women’s tennis head coach. She replaces Mike Stevens, who was named to a similar position at Cornell earlier in the month.

McGovern brings significant experience as both a teaching professional and assistant college coach. Since 2002, she has worked at the Binghamton Tennis Center teaching both private and group lessons. In addition, McGovern has acted as the junior tournament director as well the director of the junior competitive tennis program and junior summer camps.

On the college level, McGovern was the assistant coach for the Binghamton men’s tennis team from 2003-06. During that time, the Bearcats won back-to-back America East Conference titles in 2004 and 2005.

“We’re pleased to announce Libby McGovern as our new head women’s tennis coach,” Interim Athletic Director Norris said. “Libby is a former member of our men’s tennis coaching staff and is very familiar with our situation here at Binghamton. Additionally, Libby was a model Division I student athlete in all regards during her collegiate years and has served as a teaching professional locally for the past eight years. The search committee was extremely impressed with Libby’s credentials and her enthusiasm for the position. We think she will be an outstanding teacher/coach and a great addition to our department.”

A 2001 graduate of Ball State University, McGovern was a second-team All-MAC conference selection three times and was named to the conference’s all-academic team her final three years with the program.

“I want to thank the Binghamton administration for giving me this opportunity,” McGovern said. “I am very excited to lead the Women’s Tennis program at Binghamton University. This year, we have a great team coming back with a lot of experience. Overall, the program has had a lot of success in the last 9 years and I am looking forward to helping the student-athletes on the team hopefully add to these achievements.
