Cambridge, Mass.—Freshman faceoff specialist Dan Mazurek was named the men’s lacrosse America East Rookie of the Week on Monday after a record-breaking performance against Vermont on Saturday. Mazurek, a native of Ringwood, NJ, won 17-of-18 faceoffs and scooped up a program single game record 14 ground balls in Binghamton’s 9-6 win over UVM.
Mazurek won the game’s first 12 faceoffs of the game on Saturday and again forged his name in the Binghamton record book by setting a single game record in faceoff win percentage (.944). His 14 ground balls on Saturday were one better than 2009 graduate JP Wioncek and current teammate Alex Doerflein.
In addition to being dominant in the faceoff circle, Mazurek also notched his first career point at Binghamton. He was credited with an assist on Binghamton’s last goal of the fourth quarter.
The Don Bosco Prep graduate leads Binghamton in faceoff wins (84), faceoff win percentage (.542) and ground balls (53). Through 11 games, Mazurek has had 10 or more faceoff wins on four occasions and has taken 63 percent of the draws this season for the Bearcats.
Binghamton has received a weekly award winner in the past two weeks (Tucker Nelson- Player, April 7) and is now 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 2004. BU clinched a playoff berth with the win on Saturday and will play a pair of games this week, beginning with Canisius on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and ending with senior day on Saturday afternoon against Stony Brook.
