Cambridge, Mass.—The Binghamton University men’s lacrosse team was well represented when the America East announced their All-Conference teams on Wednesday evening at the annual awards reception in Stony Brook, NY. The Bearcats had six all-conference players, a pair of All-Rookie and All-Academic selections, as well as the Co-Coach of the Year in head coach Scott Nelson.

Nelson, in his third season at Binghamton, helped guide this 2014 squad to a 4-1 conference record and a two seed in the upcoming America East tournament.  The Bearcats have played their best lacrosse during the home stretch, winning five of their last seven games, including a four-game winning streak that locked up the second seed in the AE Championship. He shares Coach of the Year honors with Albany’s head coach Scott Marr who also won a season ago.

Binghamton received a pair of selections on the first team defense on Wednesday. Senior Shawn Needham earned his first all-conference nod after a terrific regular season in which he led the Bearcats in caused turnovers with 25. Needham has started all 14 games on defense for head coach Scott Nelson and currently is 15th in the country in caused turnovers per contest at 1.79.

The other senior who received recognition on the first team was LSM Garrett Augustyn . A four-year contributor from Amherst, NY, Augustyn accumulated 12 caused turnovers and 18 ground balls in 2014. In addition, Augustyn also notched his first career goal in a 13-7 win over UMBC earlier this year.

BU had four players make second team all-conference, starting with senior attackman Matt Springer. It was the second all-conference selection for the Hamburg, NY native who led the team with 37 goals this season.  Springer recorded a hat trick in half the games he played the season (7-of-14) and is tied for third in the America East in goals per game (2.64).

In the midfield, senior Michael Antinozzi makes his third straight appearance on the all-conference squad. Antinozzi is second on the team in goals (19) and assists (13) in 2014 and has scored a point in 45 consecutive games.  Two-year captain and senior defender Greg Cove also joins Antinozzi as multiple year all-conference players, making the second team defense on Wednesday. Cove, who started all 14 games this season, had 24 ground balls, 14 caused turnovers and an assist this season.

In addition to six all-conference players, Binghamton also received a pair of All-Rookie and All-Academic selections on Wednesday. Both Tyler Deluca and Dan Mazurek made a big impact in their first seasons with the program and were awarded with eight others as the top rookies in the America East. Deluca led all BU freshmen with nine goals and three assists, while Mazurek was Binghamton’s top faceoff specialist in 2014, winning a team-high 116-of-219 (.530) faceoffs and scooping up a team-leading 70 ground balls.
