HARRISONBURG, Va. – Josh Grant converted a pair of penalty kicks, leading James Madison (2-0-0) to a 3-0 win over Binghamton (0-2-0) in the final round of the JMU Men’s Soccer Invitational on Sunday afternoon at University Park. The game marked the first-ever, regular-season meeting between the two programs.
Grant made his first attempt in the 20th minute to break a scoreless tie. His second successful shot came in the 57th minute. James Durbin then sealed the win when he headed in a cross by Eric Schmidt in the 79th minute.
The Bearcats had a chance to get on the board in the 88th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick. Junior Ben Nicholson, however, had his attempt stopped by Kyle Morton.
After managing only six shots against Virginia Tech on Friday, the Bearcats more than doubled that total against the Dukes. James Madison finished with a 16-13 edge in that statistical category.
“I thought we possessed the ball well today,” head coach Paul Marco said. “We created some good opportunities in the final third of the field. In two games (this weekend), however, we allowed four goals on either set pieces or defensive mistakes and we need to correct that.”
Sophomore goalkeeper Stefano Frantellizzi finished with four saves for the Bearcats.
Binghamton heads to American University for a 5 p.m. match on Friday.
“Tommy was everywhere on the field this weekend,” Marco said. “He covered a lot of ground in both matches. Charlie had a solid first weekend for us as well.”
