WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Steven Celeste scored the game-winning goal with just 1:07 left in regulation, leading Binghamton (2-2-0) to a 2-1 win at Army (2-2-0) in a non-conference men’s soccer game on Monday afternoon at Clinton Field. The win is the second straight for the Bearcats.

With time winding down, senior forward Jake Keegan and junior forward Tommy Moon were able to get the ball to Celeste, who was stationed in front of the goal. He then fired the ball into the net from close range for his first collegiate goal.

“Our guys found a way to win today,” head coach Paul Marco said. “This was a very tough, physical match against a good opponent. We didn’t start the match well but played a lot better in the second half. We had three, really good chances to score before Steven finally did.”

The last minute heroics was a sharp contrast from the opening 1:35 of the game, in which Army took a quick 1-0 lead on a rebound goal from Michael Kim. Cameron Niccum was credited with the assist.

Keegan, who finished with a goal and an assist for the second game in a row, tied the game in the 22nd minute. He was part of a give-and-go with junior back Robbie Hughes and wound up netting third goal of the season.

Keegan is now the first player during the Binghamton men’s soccer program’s 12-year Division I era to score 20 career goals. He came into the game tied with Charles Darkwah (2002-04) and Cameron Keith (2008-09)

In goal, freshman Logan Calvey rebounded from the opening goal to finish the game with four saves. In his last three games, Calvey has surrendered just two goals.

Army finished the game with a 17-13 shot advantage but in the second half, each team had seven shots.

Binghamton returns home to face Hofstra on Friday at 8 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

NOTES: Keegan now leads the team with three goals and eight total points ... Celeste’s goal is the latest game-winner scored by the Bearcats in regulation since Matt Kriste’s goal with just 21 seconds left in regulation was the difference in a 2-1 triumph at Vermont on Oct. 24, 2009 ... attending today’s game was former Binghamton All-American Raul Martynek and his family. Martynek was named a NSCAA first-team Division III All-American in 1987.
