Men’s soccer wins 2-1 at Syracuse

Box Score

VESTAL, N.Y.—Senior back Jerome Robinson and sophomore forward Luke Halberg scored in the second half and sophomore goalkeeper Chris Hayen made a last-second save, leading Binghamton (4-5-0) to a 2-1 win at Syracuse (2-6-0) in a non-conference men’s soccer game on Tuesday night at the SU Soccer Stadium. The win marked the Bearcats’ second game against a BIG EAST opponent this season.

“I thought we improved a lot from this past weekend,” head coach Paul Marco said. “Our energy was a little better and we were very good with the soccer ball tonight.”

Although the Bearcats were kept off the scoreboard the first 53 minutes of the game, they controlled the pace of the game, outshooting the host Orange 11-5 during that span. Finally, at the 53:46 mark, Robinson headed in a cross from junior forward Jake Keegan. It marked his second goal in as many games, both of which were assisted by Keegan.

Halberg’s goal, meanwhile, came at the 73:56 mark of the match off a cross from freshman forward Steven Celeste. Like Robinson, Halberg now has two goals this season. Celeste, meanwhile, recorded his first collegiate point.

Syracuse got back in the game on Dan Summer’s first goal of the season at the 88:22 mark of the match. He then fired a shot to tie the match at the end of regulation but Hayen made a diving save to his right to preserve the victory.

Binghamton outshot Syracuse 18-13 for the game. Hayen stopped a pair of shots in the winning effort.

The Bearcats head to Vermont on Saturday for their first America East match of the season at 1 p.m.

NOTE: Keegan now leads the Bearcats in goals (four), assists (four) and total points (12) ... Halberg is second with two goals, a pair of assists and six points.
