WILMINGTON, N.C. – Patrick Harrow converted a free kick in the 24th minute, leading Appalachian State (4-1-1) to a 1-0 win over Binghamton (2-4-0) in the opening round of the Hilton Gardens Inn Classic on Friday afternoon. The weekend tournament is being hosted by UNC-Wilmington.
Binghamton outshot the Mountaineers 8-2 in the first half but Harrow’s free kick, which was deflected into the net, proved to be the difference. The Bearcats outshot Appalachian State 13-10 for the game.
“I thought our guys played their hearts out against a very good opponent tonight,” head coach Paul Marco said. “We created a lot of chances in front of the goal but they were able to make their free kick. We played quite well but were a little unfortunate.”
Freshman Stefano Frantelizzi made his first career start in goal for Binghamton. He finished with a pair of saves.
Binghamton squares off against the host Seahawks on Sunday a 2 p.m. in the final round of the Hilton Gardens Inn Classic.
