BOSTON, Mass. – Mac McGuire scored in the 26th minute, leading Boston University (6-7-4, 3-1-2 AE) to a 1-0 win over Binghamton (6-9-0, 2-4-0 AE) in an America East men’s soccer game on Wednesday evening at Nickerson Field. The loss was the Bearcats’ fourth straight setback, all of which have been decided by a single goal.
Despite the loss, Binghamton got word from the America East Conference on Wednesday night that it is assured a spot in the America East Tournament. Binghamton will be a No. 4 seed with a win at UMBC on Saturday night. A tie or loss will drop the Bearcats to a No. 5 or No. 6 seed.
As for the game on Wednesday, McGuire’s goal was his fifth of the season. It came off a pass from Anthony Ciccone.
The Bearcats held an 8-5 shot advantage in the opening half of play but could not find the back of the net. They hit the crossbar just six minutes into the contest.
In the end, however, the shots were even at 13-13.
“I thought our guys played their hearts out tonight,” head coach Paul Marco said. “We could have tactically played cleaner at times but played as hard as we ever have here (Nickerson Field). They got in behind us midway through the first half and made the most of their chance.”
Senior goalkeeper Chris Hayen made his first start in goal for Binghamton since suffering an injury in the season opener at Colgate on August 24. He finished with six saves.
Binghamton and UMBC square off at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
