HARRISONBURG, Va. – Alessandro Mion scored in the eighth minute, leading Virginia Tech (1-0-0) to a 1-0 win over Binghamton (0-1-0) in the opening round of the James Madison Tournament on Friday afternoon at University Park. The game marked the season opener for both teams.
Mion netted the eventual game winner when he finished off a shot into the box by Andre Thomas. The Hokies had set the tempo in the opening minutes with Thomas firing a wide shot just two minutes earlier.
From there, however, both defenses contained the opposing offenses the rest of the way. Although the Hokies finished with a 17-6 advantage in shots, each team had only three shots on goal during the remainder of the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Stefano Frantellizzi shook off the early goal to record three saves over the final 81 minutes of play. Kylie Renfro, meanwhile, stopped all three Bearcat shots on goal to earn the shutout.
Senior midfielder Tommy Moon fired two of the Binghamton shots on goal, both of which were stopped by Renfro.
Binghamton faces the host Dukes on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the final round of the James Madison Tournament.
NOTES: The Bearcats started three first-time players against Virginia Tech. Freshman Charlie Novoth was at midfield while redshirt freshman Logan Roberts and junior transfer Vlad Finn both started at forward.
