CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The America East Conference has released its 2012 men’s soccer preseason poll and Binghamton tied for sixth with Albany in the voting. The voting was done by the eight conference head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own team.
Stony Brook edged out Boston University 48-43 for the top spot but received six of the eight possible first-place votes. Hartford squeaked past Albany for third place, 32-31 while Vermont landed in fifth place with 22 points. The Bearcats and Great Danes each collected 17 points in the voting while New Hampshire rounded out the field with 14 points.
Excluding Boston University, the top six teams will advance to the America East Conference Tournament, which gets underway Nov. 3. The Terriers are ineligible to compete in the post season tournament due to their move to the Patriot League next year.
Binghamton, which defeated Navy in an exhibition game yesterday, returns nine of its 11 starters from last season’s finale against Boston University. The Bearcats, who missed the conference tournament for the first time since 2002, won that contest 5-1.
Senior forward Jake Keegan, who led Binghamton with seven goals, five assists and 19 points, is the top returning scorer for the Bearcats. Senior back Trey Jasenski was a second-team all-conference back last year and sophomore midfielder Tucker Sandercock was named to the America East All-Rookie Team. All four starting backs return for Binghamton this year.
Binghamton opens up its 2012 season at Colgate on August 24.
