SOMERS, Wis. - The Binghamton men’s swimming and diving team program has had an inauspicious start to the 2011-12 season. After dropping their first three dual meets the Bearcats garnered the No. 24 spot in CollegeSwimming.com’s Mid-Major Division I poll, as released Thursday.
The Bearcats earned a ranking in the season’s first poll for the second time in as many years. Last season, Binghamton was ranked No. 25 in the inaugural poll. The BU men were most recently defeated by Drexel, 170-128, in their home opener, but showed promise with freshmen Alexi Corey and Emmett Jacobi swimming to their first collegiate victories.
Binghamton’s strength of schedule assisted their ranking as two of BU’s three defeats came from teams also ranked in the poll. The University of Massachusetts and Boston University each handed the BU losses, but are currently ranked No. 16 and No. 19, respectively
“It’s nice to have some recognition for our overall team strength,” head coach Sean Clark stated. “We have only two seniors pulling us along, so the underclassmen have had to band together to push us further. Depth and balance are key components to this year’s team, but we’re still looking for some more men to rise above and give us a few solid performances.”
Joining Binghamton in the poll is fellow America East member UMBC, who is ranked No. 10. One other Bearcat opponent found themselves on the poll. The University of Buffalo, who Binghamton will face on Jan. 14, is ranked No. 9.
Binghamton was also ranked in the poll in April of 2010, when they finished the season ranked 24th.
The Bearcats enter the waters again this weekend as they travel to Marist with the first race set to begin at 1 p.m. at the McCann Natatorium.
