PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior Robin Lesage went 4-0 to capture his singles flight at the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational, held this weekend at the Lenz Tennis Center. There were 14 teams competing in six singles and two doubles flights and BU’s contingent went a collective 12-4 in singles.
In addition to Lesage’s performance, junior Ismael Dinia shook off an opening loss and won three straight matches to take the consolation bracket in his draw. FreshmanThomas Caputo won twice to place runnerup in his flight.
In Sunday’s final, Lesage rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Shawn Hadavi of Columbia. Earlier in the quarterfinals, he pushed past Alex Wilton of Cornell, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
“Robin had a solid tournament,” head coach Adam Cohen said. “He kept hitting the ball better and better as he progressed through his flight. I think it will give him some confidence going into a tough tournament this weekend at Yale.”
In his final match on Sunday, Dinia shook off an opening 6-1 set against Kyle Dawson of Yale before winning 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8).
Binghamton’s top singles player, sophomore Sid Hazarika, lost his opening match to the eventual champion from Columbia, and then dropped a tight three-set match in the consolation draw before rebounding with three match wins to close out his tournament on a positive note. Hazarika, ranked No. 122, beat Jason Brown of Yale (6-1, 6-1) and Freddy Ruiz Acevedo of St. John’s (6-3, 6-5). Then in his final match, Hazarika defeated Ashwin Sharma of Buffalo, 6-1, 6-3.
The doubles tandem of Lesage and Caputo won its opening match against Yale before losing to the top pair and eventual champions from Columbia.
The Bearcats will send players to both the Virginia Plus One Invitational and Ivy League Invite at Yale this weekend.
