VESTAL, N.Y. – Freshman forward Morgan Murphy has been named the America East Rookie of the Week for Nov. 5-11. She earned the honor by virtue of her performance in Saturday’s season opener at St. Bonaventure.
Coming off the bench, Murphy scored a team-high 12 points and added seven rebounds. She shot 4-for-9 from the field and was 4-for-5 from the free throw line.
“I am happy for Morgan and our program,” head coach Nicole Scholl said. “This is a great start for her.”
Murphy is the first Binghamton freshman to reach double figures in scoring in her collegiate debut since current junior Jasbriell Swain scored 18 points, also against St. Bonaventure, on Nov. 12, 2010.
In addition, Murphy is the first Bearcat to be named rookie of the week since Swain earned her fifth and final such accolade on Feb. 21, 2011. Swain went on to be named the conference’s Rookie of the Year.
Binghamton (0-1) hosts Cornell on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
