Vestal, N.Y.—The NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet recently approved the Automatic Qualifying conferences for 2011-12. The first conference listed happened to be none other than the America Sky conference. After four long years of waiting, the 2012 America Sky champion will represent the league in the NCAA Championship.

Binghamton joined the Division I ranks back in 2002, where they competed in the America East conference. They enjoyed lots of success early on qualifying for three straight NCAA regional tournaments from 2003-2005. Binghamton made the move to the America Sky Conference in 2007 as a founding member. Eleven other schools compete in the America Sky including Weber State, Sacramento State, Northern Colorado, Utah Valley State, Hartford, South Dakota, Texas Pan American, Houston Baptist, North Dakota, Chicago State and most recently added Seattle University. Up until this point, the winner of the conference championship has not been rewarded with a trip to the NCAA tournament. With the news breaking earlier this week, that will all be a thing of the past.

“It’s certainly exciting to hear this news,” BU head golf coach Bernie Herceg said. “It’s taken a lot of patience from everyone involved and we are thrilled at the opportunity to compete for a NCAA berth. I couldn’t be happier for our players, our university and the rest of the teams in our conference who are now able to showcase their talents on the national stage.”

Binghamton has some work ahead of them as they are still looking for their first America Sky Championship crown. Last season, Binghamton had their best showing with a fourth place finish at Troon North GC in Scottsdale, Arizona. This year the event will be held at the Lake of Isles GC in North Stonington, Connecticut April 30-May 2.
