VESTAL, N.Y.—For the second straight year Binghamton wrestling will have two top-10 seeds to highlight a four-man contingent set to compete at the NCAA Championship, which begins this Thursday at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. The Bearcats were looking to escape the snow in Binghamton and catch a flight to Omaha, where they are scheduled to bus to Des Moines in time to get a workout at the arena Wednesday afternoon. The three-day national championship begins at noon (ET) on Thursday and finishes up with the finals on Saturday night.
Senior 149-pound Donnie Vinson was awarded the No. 3 seed and by virtue of the random draw, was given the only preliminary bout in the weight class (leading into round of 32). Vinson (29-1), the four-time NCAA qualifier and reigning All-American, will open his tournament against unseeded Ian Paddock of Ohio State. Paddock (14-7), a redshirt junior and three-time NCAA qualifier, placed sixth at the Big Ten championship to earn his berth. Vinson captured his second straight CAA title and also was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Wrestler for a second consecutive year. At the 2012 NCAA Championship, Vinson rebounded from an opening-match setback to rattle off seven straight wins and place third - the highest-ever finish by a Bearcat at the Division I tournament. Vinson is 8-1 against the NCAA field this year.
Senior 197-pound Nate Schiedel was given the No. 7 seed and he will start his final NCAA Championship with a match against unseeded Conner Hartman of Duke. Hartman (20-9) is a freshman who placed third at the ACC Championship to qualify. Schiedel (26-2), a four-time NCAA qualifier, is coming off a runnerup showing at the CAA Championship. He is 5-1 against the NCAA field. Schiedel went 2-2 at the 2012 NCAA Championship down at 184 pounds.
Unseeded junior 184-pound Cody Reed (18-13) is making his second-straight NCAA appearance and he drew No. 6 Ryan Loder of Northern Iowa in the opening match. Loder (30-4) is a three-time NCAA qualifier who finished runnerup at the Mid-American Championship to qualify. Reed and Loder faced each other in late December at the Midlands Championship with Loder prevailing 3-0 en route to a fourth-place finish. Reed will look to duplicate his start from the 2012 Championship, when he upended the No. 4 seed from Maryland, 2-1, to advance. He wound up going 2-2 at 197 pounds.
In his first NCAA Championship appearance, unseeded senior 133-pound Derek Steeley drew unseeded Sam Speno of N.C. State in his first match. Speno (16-12), a freshman who placed fourth at the ACC Championship, will have the benefit of an intimate scouting report as his head coach is former Bearcat coach Pat Popolizio. Steeley (15-12) earned his automatic NCAA berth by finishing second at the CAA Championship. He is 3-4 against the NCAA field this season.
The Championship will begin Thursday at noon ET. All six sessions will be broadcast either over the web or live on television by the ESPN networks. Thursday’s action in Session I and Session II will be live on ESPN3.com with four mats. The quarterfinals will also be available on ESPN3. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be broadcast live on ESPNU with side-by-side mat coverage, while the finals will be live on ESPN on Saturday, March 23 at 8 p.m. ET.
