VESTAL, N.Y.—Orla O’Reilly, who was a four-year member and two-year starter for the Binghamton women’s basketball team, has signed a contract to play in Spain this upcoming year. She will suit up for the Arxil Pontevedra, which competes in the Liga Femenina 2 (the Spanish women’s league’s second division).
O’Reilly, who earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology, started in her final two seasons for the Bearcats, ranked second on the squad this season with 11.7 points per game and was the top three-point shooter (.327). Her signature game was a 21-point effort in Binghamton’s 48-45 upset of host Hartford in the 2012 America East quarterfinals. In addition, O’Reilly was named the America East Player of the Week on Nov. 21, 2011.
“I am extremely happy for Orla and excited that she will be able to continue her career on a professional level,” head coach Nicole Scholl said. “It’s a well-deserved accomplishment.”
“I have always wanted to play basketball in Spain so I am really looking forward to it,” O’Reilly told her hometown paper, the Evening Echo.
O’Reilly will be the third player who has graduated during Binghamton’s 11-year Division I era to suit up for a professional team. Current assistant coach Sarah Cartmill played overseas in Ireland (2002-04) and Denmark (2004-05). Fellow assistant coach Leah Truncale, meanwhile, played in Ireland from 2005-09.
