Paint the Paws initiative continues as BU tradition

VESTAL, N.Y.—Every fall, Binghamton University partakes in the “Painting the Paws” project to kick off the new school year. Unlike in years past where the project coincided with homecoming weekend, this year’s activities had to be pushed back due to inclement weather. On Wednesday, that weather seemed to be a thing of the past as students lined the sidewalks on what was a beautiful sunny afternoon.

“Paint the Paws” began as a project which all University groups could participate, but over time evolved into a spirit squad activity. Associate Athletic Director, Dave Simek, organizes and participates in the function providing, paint, brushes, the paw print stencil and even a leaf blower for rapid drying.

The spirit squads joining efforts for the project include the Dance, Cheer and Kickline teams as well as the Pep Band. The four units come together and paint Bearcat paws on all paths that lead to the Bearcats Sports Complex and Events Center. Fans of the Bearcats will undoubtedly notice the paw prints as they enter games at the Bearcats Sports Complex all year long.

“Not only is this a great way to kick start the new school year,” senior Kickline president Jennifer Lobodzic said. “It’s also a great way to build camaraderie, not only with your own members but amongst all four squads. We are all in this together, and it’s great to see so much excitement and pride come away from all this.  “

Junior dance squad member Kira Farberov believes it’s a great opportunity to excite the campus and community alike. “It’s really a unique way of spreading spirit around the campus,” explained Farberov.  “When your walking to a soccer or lacrosse game most fans will point out the paw trail. I always enjoy hearing feedback about the paws because we actually took part in making this happen.”

The “Paint the Paws” tradition that was upheld this year by about 50 members from the four spirit squads. The members celebrated after with a pizza party to wrap up the day’s events.
