VESTAL, N.Y.—After last year’s “Painting the Paws” event was moved back until after Homecoming Weekend due to inclimate weather, the event went according to plan, on a sunny Thursday afternoon.  The “Painting the Paws” project is one of the first events to signal the always anticipated Homecoming Weekend.

This year’s event was a little more special with the new additions to the Bearcats Sports Complex. The spirit squads donned the newly opened baseball and softball fields and tennis courts with their own paw tracks. The four units that comprise the spirit squads also re-painted the faded paw prints leading down the sidewalk toward the Sports Complex where the BU soccer and lacrosse teams play.

“Paint the Paws” has developed into a spirit squad activity since its beginning six years ago.  Associate Athletic Director, Dave Simek, organizes the initiative and supplies the spirit squads with paint, rollers, and a number of paw print stencils.

Members of the spirit squads, which include the Dance, Cheer and Kickline teams along with the Pep Band all joined in the effort to “Paint the Paws”.  The four squads painted paws all around the Events Center and Sports Complex for an added dimension for school pride and spirit.  Bearcat fans will undeniably notice the dark green paw prints all year long on their walk to and from Binghamton athletic events.

Senior cheer team captain Samantha Player knows how important Homecoming Weekend is to the community including the freshly painted paws.  “I know all the alumni are coming and our friends and families are coming too so there is going to be a huge turnout.  I think everybody will enjoy them and any little part that makes Binghamton look better and nicer is a positive.”

“It’s so much fun to meet all the new members of all the different spirit squads,” stated kickline member Ashley Haugstatter.  “And since we have new people on our team its fun to get to know everyone as well.”

At the end of the day, with all paws painted, the spirit squads gathered together for a pizza party.
