Plymouth Meeting, PA—On Sunday, the BU men’s golf team wrapped up its fourth tournament of the fall season with a sixth place finish at the Philadelphia Big 5 Invitational held at the Plymouth Country Club. In a field of 22 teams, the Bearcats climbed up the leaderboard three spots on Sunday with a final round team score of 295 (+15). Dartmouth University came away victorious with a six shot victory at the team event hosted by Temple University.
On a course that is extremely hard to attack, fourth year head coach Bernie Herceg is pleased with the result. “The greens at Plymouth Country Club are extremely difficult to navigate and can really punish you if you don’t execute,” Herceg explained. “We didn’t putt as well as I hoped but we battled all weekend and kept ourselves in the hunt.”
Pacing Binghamton all weekend was junior David Cellura who out of 113 individuals competing tied a career-best finish of sixth place. Cellura shot identical rounds of 72 on both Saturday and Sunday, only six shots back of medalist Sebastian Backlund from Francis Marion University. During his final round, he managed to recover from back-to-back bogeys at the turn with three straight birdies including a two on the par-3 12th.
“I’m really proud of the way David kept his composure this weekend,” Herceg said. “He may not have had his “A” game, but as usual he fought and he battled all weekend to come away with the sixth place finish.”
Sophomore Bryce Edmister (T-32) turned in another respectable outing on the strength of a final round two-over-par scorecard. Edmister struggled with his consistency on Saturday tallying five birdies, seven bogeys and two doubles. On Sunday he turned things around by registering 10 pars, including six on the back nine. After a superb runner-up showing at the Cornell Invitational, sophomore Paul Andrews continued his sold play by finishing tied for 38th.
The Bearcats head down south to Clarksville, Tennessee on October 17-18 finishing up their fall campaign at the F&M Bank Intercollegiate hosted by Austin Peay University.
