VESTAL, N.Y.—Alexandre Haggai of the men’s tennis team and Robb Quiller of the men’s track & field squad have been named America East Scholar-Athletes in their respective sports for the 2012 spring season. They earned the accolade based on their academic and athletic accomplishments during the past athletic season and throughout their academic career.
Each year, the America East Conference selects one Scholar-Athlete for each of the sports that it sponsors. Quiller, who was named for the outdoor track season, and Haggai join Adam Quinn, who was the conference’s selection during the indoor track campaign.
Haggai helped continue the Binghamton men’s tennis streak of five conference championships, and won the 2012 America East Player of the Year and championship Most Outstanding Player awards. He captured his team’s MVP honor and became the program’s all-time doubles wins leader. Haggai was also named to the America East All-Academic Team as well as the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
Quiller is a seven-time America East All-Conference performer in the pole vault, placing in the top two in all four of his America East Outdoor Track & Field Championship appearances. He has also been named to five America East All-Academic Teams. Earlier in the spring, Quiller earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and was a 2012 SUNY Chancellor’s Academic Scholar-Athlete Award winner.
Since 2003, Binghamton has had 30 America East Scholar-Athlete selections. In addition, former track & field NCAA champion Rory Quiller was named the conference’s male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in both 2007 and 2008. Former men’s tennis ITA Northeast Regional champion Sven Vloedgraven, meanwhile, was the male Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2010 and 2011.
