VESTAL, N.Y.—For the second time in four weeks, the Binghamton women’s basketball team has swept the America East Conference’s weekly accolades. Junior forward Viive Rebane earned her first Player of the Week selection while freshman guard Jasbriell Swain was tabbed the Rookie of the Week for the third time this year. This marks the first time the Bearcats have swept the weekly honors twice in the same season since they joined the America East Conference in 2001.
Rebane had 18 points and nine rebounds against Mt. St. Mary’s on Saturday. It marked the third time in the past four games she has scored at least 16 points. During that span, Rebane has averaged 16.0 points 7.2 rebounds per contest. For the season, Rebane is averaging a career-high 11.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.
Swain posted 12 points and six rebounds against Mt. St. Mary’s on Saturday. In the process, she reached double figures for the seventh time in the past 10 games. Swain is second on the team with 11.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game. She is on track to post the highest scoring average by a Binghamton freshman in the program’s Division I history. The current record of 11.3 ppg. was set by Jen Blues during the 2002-03 season.
Binghamton has now earned Player of the Week honors two weeks in a row. Junior point guard Andrea Holmes was the pick last week.
In the five weeks since the start of the season, Binghamton has earned six weekly accolades. Holmes was the Player of the Week on Nov. 22.
Binghamton is 6-4 heading into the Monmouth Tournament Dec. 29-30.
NOTE: Swain was also the Rookie of the Week on Nov. 15 and Nov. 22. Holmes holds the program record with four America East Rookie of the Week selections during the 2008-09 season. Rebane was named the America East Rookie of the Week on Feb. 16, 2009.
