SAAC and Soles4Souls Join Forces For Fall Shoe Drive
Coach Dempsey and Scholl will each roam sidelines shoeless in support

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Soles4Souls shoe charity are teaming up for a shoe drive in an effort to help those less fortunate around the world. The fundraiser, which runs from Nov. 1 to Dec. 30, is being sponsored by SAAC in honor of Dr. Douglass Kerr for his 20-plus years of service at the University.
Throughout the months of November and December collection bins bearing the Soles4Souls logo will be housed on the Events Center concourse, in the West Gym lobby and outside the Events Center Sports Medicine suite welcoming new or gently worn shoes. All types of shoes will be accepted during normal business hours and at all home basketball games.
Soles4Souls is a Nashville-based charity that has delivered 19 million pairs of shoes to over 125 countries both for crisis relief and to support micro-enterprise projects. Shoes are generously donated by footwear companies, retailers, religious organizations, civic groups, schools and individuals. Following the creation of Soles4Souls in 2006, three more branches have been added to the non-profit organization including Clothes4Souls, Hope4Souls and Travel4Souls.
In support of SAAC’s effort, head men’s basketball coach Tommy Dempsey and head women’s basketball coach Nikki Scholl will each coach a game this season shoeless. Coach Scholl will go without shoes on Monday, Dec. 10 against Niagara while Coach Dempsey will help wrap up the shoe drive on Sunday, Dec. 30 versus Cornell.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has established a tentative goal of 2,500 pairs to be shipped to a Soles4Souls warehouse where they will then be prepared for delivery across the globe. To learn more about Soles4Souls please visit www.soles4souls.org.
