Seniors Dave Ciocchi, Robb Quiller, Ryan Walter and Nolan Slesnick, as well as juniors Jessica Phillips and Vasili Papastrat have received the SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2011-12 academic year. Each of them earned the honor through their accomplishments both on the field and in the classroom.
Each year, the SUNY system recognizes student-athletes from each of its athletic institutions for its Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 as well as significant accomplishments in their sport are required for consideration. This year, all six of Binghamton’s honorees more than met the requirements, which each of them carrying at least a 3.15 and earning all-conference honors during their career.
“We are very proud of these six individuals who embody the true ideals of being a student-athlete at Binghamton,” Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott said. “Their dedication to both their sport and their academic pursuits serves as a great model for all to follow and we congratulate them.”
Ciocchi is a two-year, first-team all-conference outfielder on the Binghamton baseball team. He will graduate as one of the program’s top three players in career hits, runs and RBI. Ciocchi has been named to the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which is designated for a student-athlete within the conference who attains at least a 3.5 during the semester in which their sport in competing.
Papastrat earned all-conference honors during the cross country season with a ninth-place finish at the America East Championship meet in October. He was also named to the America East All-Academic Squad for that season. This past weekend, he was fourth overall in the 10,000 at the America East Outdoor Track & Field Championships, helping the Bearcats to a runner-up finish.
Walter has been a two-year men’s soccer captain, a three-year all-conference midfielder and a two-time member of the America East All-Academic Team. He is also a member of the National College Athlete Honors Society.
Phillips is a three-year all-conference outfielder on the softball team and has been named to the America East Academic Honor Roll each season. She was the America East Co-Player of the Year in 2010 and is also a two-time, first-team All-Mid Atlantic Region selection.
Slesnick concluded a standout career on the men’s swimming team with four career individual titles at the America East Championships. He too has been on the America East Academic Honor Roll and received the conference’s Coaches’ Award following this year’s championship meet in February.
Quiller will conclude his track & field career with two individual conference titles in the pole vault and six all-conference selections. He has been named to the America East All-Academic Team four times during his career. Like Walter, he is also a member of the National College Athlete Honor Society.
Since 2003, 47 Binghamton student-athlete have earned the SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar-Athlete Award.
