Softball gains split at first day of adidas/Longwood Classic

Box Score: Binghamton 7, UNC-Central 1

Box Score: Longwood 5, Binghamton 2

FARMVILLE, Va.—Junior pitcher Rhoda Marsteller tossed a four-hitter and sophomore pitcher/designated hitter Demi Laney went 3-for-5 with a home run, highlighting Binghamton’s performance at the opening day of the adidas/Longwood Classic on Saturday afternoon at Lancer Field. The Bearcats (4-8) beat UNC-Central (1-18) before losing 5-2 to the Lancers (14-7) on a walk off home run in the finale.

Marsteller improved her record to 2-3 by going seven innings and not allowing an earned run in the opener against UNC-Central. She struck out five batters and did not allow a walk.

Binghamton gave Marsteller all the run support she’d need in the bottom of the first inning. Junior outfielder Jessica Phillips doubled in the first run and later scored on a single by Laney as the Bearcats took a quick 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Bearcats took advantage of an error, a wild pitch and a passed ball to plate four more runs. Sophomore second baseman Jessica Bump doubled in a run during that frame and later scored on a ground out by sophomore catcher Lisa Cutrona.

Laney reached on an error to start off the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore Anna Blessing, who pinch ran for Laney, later scored on a RBI single by sophomore Chelsey Locatell.

UNC-Central took advantage of a Bearcat miscue to break up the shut out in the top of the sixth inning.

Down 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning of the game against Longwood, the Bearcats got back-to-back solo home runs by sophomore first baseman Mikala King and Laney to tie the game. King is now tied for the team lead with three home runs (with Phillips) and leads the squad with a .389 batting average and 10 RBI.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, however, Brittany Latka drilled a one-out, three-run home run to end the game.

“It was a tough loss,” head coach Michelle Burrell said. “I thought our effort was good but we couldn’t come up with the key hits towards the end of the game.”

Laney was tagged with the loss and is now 1-3. Ashley Cornell improved her record to 1-1 with the win,.

On Sunday, the Bearcats face UNC-Wilmington at 10 a.m. and Longwood at 12:15 p.m.
