FAIRFAX, Va. – McKenzie Rhodes belted a three-run home run and Shawna Mailloux drove in a pair of runs, powering Akron (11-5) to a 7-3 win over Binghamton (7-10) in the final game of the GMU Cherry Blossom Classic on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Bearcats ended the tournament with a 1-4 record.
For two innings, the games had the look of a pitcher’s duel between senior Demi Laney and Erin Seiler. Laney held the Raiders hitless during that stretch while Seiler allowed only a pair of base runners.
In the third inning, however, each team scored twice. Mailloux had a RBI double and scored one batter later on a fielding error, putting Akron up 2-0. Senior second baseman Jessica Bump cut the deficit to 2-1 on a triple in the bottom of the frame. She scored the tying run one batter later on a groundout by sophomore Lisa Cadogan.
Rhodes broke the game open with her three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning. The Bearcats got a run back in the bottom of the frame when senior designated hitter Lisa Cutrona scored on a groundout.
The Zips added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Mailloux drove in the second run on a sacrifice fly.
Sieler improved to 6-1 while Laney’s record dropped to 7-4.
Binghamton heads to UMass Lowell next weekend for its opening America East Conference series of the year.
