WASHINGTON D.C.—Senior pitcher Demi Laney picked up two victories and tossed a complete-game shutout, leading Binghamton to a pair of wins in the final day of the George Washington Colonial Tournament on Sunday. The Bearcats (6-6) beat Wagner 8-4 and shut out Mt. St. Mary’s 1-0 to finish the weekend 3-1.
Against the Moutaineers, Laney scattered three hits, struck out six batters and did not issue a walk to improve to 6-2 on the season. Junior shortstop Caytlin Friis scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the third inning courtesy of a fielding error.
In the opener against Wagner, it was a six-run bottom of the fifth inning that propelled the Bearcats to the win. Senior second baseman Jessica Bump led off the frame with a triple. She scored one batter later on an error to tie the game at 3-3. The key hit of the inning, however, was a two-run single by sophomore outfielder Sydney Harbaugh
Binghamton heads to the George Mason Tournament March 14-16.
NOTES: Laney finished the weekend 3-0 with a 1.56 ERA. She struck out 17 batters in 18.0 innings and gave up only four walks. She now has a pair of shutouts so far this season ... sophomore infielder Lisa Cadogan hit a team-best .444 during the GW Tournament (4-for-9).
