LUBBBOCK, Texas—Sandy James hit the go-ahead home run in the bottom of the fifth inning as host Texas Tech (17-5) defeat Binghamton (3-7) 4-3 in the final game of its weekend tournament. The host Red Raiders went through the three-day event unbeaten.
Binghamton hit three solo home runs to stay in the game. Sophomore first baseman Mikala King deadlocked the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning. It was her second home run in the past three game and increased her team-leading RBI total on the season to nine.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, however, Texas Tech went up 3-1. Katelyn Williams doubled home the first run and scored later in the frame.
Freshman Caitlin Friis and junior Jessica Phillips each homered in the top of the fifth inning, which tied the game at 3-3. Phillips now has a team-best three home runs on the season.
Following James’ decisive shot, the Bearcats went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings.
Ashlie Brokeshoulder, who pitched 2.1 scoreless innings in a relief role, got the win. Her record is 1-0. The loss was tagged to Demi Laney, who is now 1-2.
Up next for Binghamton is the Longwood Tournament, which will be held March 10-11.
