Softball drops pair of games at GMU Cherry Blossom Classic
Bearcats lose 9-1 to Colgate, 5-3 to Akron

FAIRFAX, Va. – Binghamton lost both of its games in the opening day of the Cherry Blossom Classic on Friday at the GMU Softball Complex. The Bearcats (6-8) lost 9-1 to Colgate (2-9) in six innings and 5-3 to Akron (10-2) in eight innings.
In the opener, the Raiders plated eight of their runs in the first two innings. The Bearcats committed four errors during that stretch and as a result, five of the runs were unearned.
Sophomore first baseman Lisa Cadogan broke the shutout when she led off the top of the fourth inning with her first home run of the year.
Colgate, however, ended the game two innings later on a RBI double by Haley Fleming.
Brigit Leuter improved to 2-5 with the win while freshman pitcher Annika Weisinger fell to 0-5.
Freshman third baseman Crysti Eichner went 2-for-2 in the opener.
In the nightcap, Taryn Allmon’s two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning propelled the Zips to the walk-off win.
Sophomore outfielder Sydney Harbaugh, who homered earlier in the game, was placed on second base with the score tied at 2-2 in the top of the eighth inning. She scored two batters later on a groundout by Eichner.
Mackenize Conrad tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a RBI double. She scored one batter later on Allmon’s game-winning homer.
Erin Seiler improved to 5-0 with the win while senior pitcher Demi Laney saw her record drop to 6-3. Both pitchers worked all eight innings.
Freshman outfielder Bridget Hunt finished the day 3-for-5.
Play continues on Saturday at the Cherry Blossom Classic. The Bearcats face Colgate again at 12:45 and square off against the host Patriots at 5:15 p.m.
