WASHINGTON D.C.—Sophomore catcher Taylor Chaffee drove in three runs, highlighting Binghamton’s split in the opening day of the George Washington Tournament on Saturday morning. The Bearcats (4-6) beat Mt. St. Mary’s (6-6) 5-4 in the opener but lost to the host Colonials (2-13) 5-2 in the second game.

Chaffee drove in all of her runs against the Mountaineers. She doubled home a run in the bottom of the first inning and later scored on a wild pitch, putting Binghamton up 2-0. With the Bearcats trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Chaffee belted a two-run home run, putting the Bearcats ahead to stay.

Senior pitcher Demi Laney improved to 4-2. She pitched the first six innings. Freshman pitcher Annika Wiesinger tossed a scoreless seventh inning to record her first career save.

After four scoreless innings against George Washington, the Bearcats took advantage of a pair of errors to take a 2-0 lead. They committed two errors of their own in the bottom of the frame, however, leading to all five Colonial runs.

Wiesinger, who went the distance in the second game, saw her record fall to 0-4.

Binghamton concludes play at the GW Tournament on Sunday with games against Wagner (9 a.m.) and Mt. St. Mary’s (1:30 p.m.).
