Softball swept at Maine in America East doubleheader 8-2 and 4-2
Tucker finishes doubleheader 4-for-6

ORONO, Maine—Hilary Kane and Jessica Burk each hit a grand slam, powering Maine (9-24, 2-5 AE) to a sweep over Binghamton (15-21, 6-5 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon and Kessock Field. The Black Bears won the opener 8-2 before taking the nightcap 4-2.
Kane drilled her grand slam in the bottom of the first inning of game one, putting the Black Bears ahead 4-1. Junior outfielder Jessica Phillips pulled Binghamton to within 4-2 in the top of the fifth inning when she hit her team-high ninth home run of the season. In the bottom of the fifth inning, however, the Bearcats committed a pair of errors and Maine scored a pair of unearned runs to go up 6-2. The Black Bears then got a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run single by Dagmar Ralphs.
Ashley Kelley improved her record to 4-10 with the complete-game victory. The loss was tagged to senior pitcher Kristen Emerling, who is now 4-6.
Burk, meanwhile, belted her grand slam with one out in the bottom of the third inning of the second game. Binghamton’s only response was a two-run single by sophomore first baseman Mikala King in the top of the sixth inning.
Beth Spoehr scattered two runs on five hits and struck out five batters to raise her record to 3-6. Sophomore pitcher Demi Laney took the loss and is now 6-7.
Senior outfielder Meghan Tucker finished the day 4-for-6 (.667). Phillips was 2-for-6 (.333) with her homer and scored a pair of runs. Senior designated hitter Chelsea Horne was also 2-for-6 and smacked a pair of doubles.
Binghamton and Maine conclude their series on Sunday at 11 a.m.
