ALBANY, N.Y.—Brittany MacFawn allowed only one run on one hit, struck out 10 batters and did not issue a walk, leading Albany (31-10, 12-3 AE) to a 7-1 win over Binghamton (15-25, 6-9 AE) in an America East Conference softball game on Saturday at Albany Field. With the victory, the Great Danes sweep the three-game weekend series from the Bearcats.
MacFawn ended the weekend allowing only two runs on two hits and striking out 15 batters in 14 innings of work. The MVP of last year’s America East Tournament improved her record to 16-4 on the season.
Offensively, Albany gave MacFawn more than enough run support. Lauren Alcorn put the Great Danes up 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run double. Vicky McFarland made it 4-0 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Great Danes nearly ended the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. They scored three times and left a runner on third base at the end of the frame. Stephanie Talerico provided the key hit of the inning, driving home a pair of runs on a two-out single.
Junior outfielder Jessica Phillips broke up the perfect game with a lead off home run in the top of the seventh inning. It was her 10th home run of the game. MacFawn, however, retired the next three batters to end the game.
Junior pitcher Rhoda Marsteller took the loss and is now 3-7 on the season.
Binghamton heads to Colgate for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
