Softball picked fourth in America East Preseason Poll

America East Release

VESTAL, N.Y.—The America East Conference has released its annual softball preseason poll and Binghamton has been picked to finish fourth out of seven teams. The voting was done by the seven conference head coaches, none of which were allowed to vote for their own team.

Albany and Boston tied for first place with 32 points and three first-place votes. The Terriers, however, are ineligible to compete in the four-team America East Tournament due to their move to the Patriot League next season. Stony Brook earned 30 points as well as the other first-place vote. The Bearcats earned 19 points, finishing ahead of Maine (18), Hartford (10) and UMBC (seven).

Binghamton opens up its season Feb. 15-17 at the Felsberg Memorial Tournament, which is being hosted by Florida International University. The Bearcats return 12 players from the 2012 squad, which finished 22-29, and are seeking their second conference tournament appearance in three seasons.

Senior outfielder Jessica Phillips is a three-time all-conference selection, having earned second-team honors in 2010 and last season. She was also named first-team all-conference in 2011 and went on to be named that season’s America East Co-Player of the Year.

Junior infielders Jessica Bump and Mikala King as well as sophomore infielder Caytlin Friis are all returning starters. Friis was an America East All-Rookie selection last year while Bump earned the same honor in 2011.

Binghamton also returns three pitchers in seniors Rhoda Marsteller, Kate Price and junior Demi Laney.

Among this year’s top freshmen are outfielder Sydney Harbaugh, infielder Tiffany McIntosh and catchers Lisa Cadogan and Taylor Chaffee.

Head coach Michelle Burrell is entering her fourth season as the head coach. She has led Binghamton to at least 22 wins in each of her first three seasons.

This season marks the Bearcats’ first in their new softball facility. Binghamton’s first official home game comes against Niagara on March 28 at 3 p.m.

The America East Tournament will be held May 9-11 at the site of the regular-season champion. If Boston University finishes first, the tournament will be held at the site of the next-highest team.
