Softball unable to hold lead, drops series finale at Maine 3-2
Black Bears finish three-game sweep with walk-off victory

ORONO, Maine—Jessica Burk singled in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, leading Maine (10-24, 3-5 AE) to a 3-2 win over Binghamton (15-22, 6-6 AE) in an America East softball game on Sunday morning at Kessock Field. With the victory, the Blacks finish off the three-game conference series sweep over the Bearcats.
Down 2-1 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Maine tied the game on a RBI single by Jenny MacDowell. EmJ Fogel was then intentionally walk, setting the stage for Burk’s heroics. Both of the runs were unearned due a Binghamton error earlier in the frame.
The Bearcats had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Sophomore catcher Lisa Cutrona singled in the first run and freshman third baseman Linda Verduzco stole home on a wild pitch. The shutout stood until Dagmar Ralphs singled home Maine’s first run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Ashley Kelly held Binghamton to two runs on three hits and issued only one walk to raise her record to 5-10. She retired the last 10 Binghamton batters. Junior pitcher Kate Price took the loss and is now 2-3.
Binghamton has the week off before heading to Albany for another three-game conference series next Saturday and Sunday.
