America East release

VESTAL, N.Y.—The Binghamton University swimming and diving program earned its first America East accolade of the season following their one-point upset victory over the University of Massachusetts. Sophomore Tiffany Siu was name Female Swimmer of the Week, as announced by the conference Tuesday.

“Tin Wai is a tremendous competitor,” head coach Sean Clark said. “She trained hard all summer long looking to make improvements over last year. Her strength and versatility are important to our team, and we’re proud to see her earn the recognition for her outstanding efforts here in the early season.”

This past weekend, Binghamton won its first ever dual meet against UMass since they began competing in 2006. The Bearcats won the meet on the final event of the day, the 500 freestyle relay. The foursome of Olivia Baczek, Caitlin Nelson, Amanda Ciccone and Siu touched first in a time of 4:34.47.

Down 153-149 going into the day’s final race, Binghamton needed all 11 points to secure the win. It was a highly competitive heat, but Ciccone was able to give Siu a bit of a cushion as the final leg began. Siu took the slight lead and ran away with the race. UMass took second and third making the final score 160-159.

Siu notched three other victories during the two-day event. She also helped Binghamton get off to a fast start against Clark’s alma mater, by swimming a leg on the first place 200 medley relay team to begin the meet.

The sophomore won the 400 IM in pool-record time, finishing the race in just 4:32.75, breaking her old mark of 4:33.40. She also flew to victory in the 500 free (5:04.62) and 200 fly (2:07.43). In the first dual meet of the season Siu earned Binghamton 27 points as well as contributing to the 22 won from the relays.

Ciccone and Baczek also gained 27 points for BU by winning three individual races themselves.

Binghamton competes again Saturday, Nov. 13 at Drexel University. The event begins at 1 p.m.
