VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton University’s 21 varsity teams and 422 student-athletes continued their academic prowess with a lofty 3.11 grade-point average for the 2011 fall semester. The mark was the highest fall semester average in 10 years, behind only the 3.17 fall GPA achieved in 2001. It was the 12th consecutive semester that Binghamton student-athletes eclipsed the 3.0 plateau.
Fifteen teams surpassed a 3.0 GPA for the semester, led by the four-time reigning America East champion men’s tennis team, which boasted a 3.57 GPA.
Forty-two percent of BU’s athletes achieved a semester GPA of 3.3 or higher and a staggering 61 percent (257 student-athletes) were above a 3.0. Fourteen individuals from 10 different teams recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall.
“We are very proud of our student-athletes for continuing a long-standing tradition of performance in the classroom,” said Director of Athletics Pat Elliott. “It demonstrates their commitment to academic success and it clearly shows our department vision for ‘excellence with honor,’” Elliott said.
Binghamton student-athletes have posted an average GPA of 3.0 or higher in 18 of 21 semesters since the school elevated to Division I athletics in Fall 2001.
