Swimming and Diving Completes Day One At Bucknell Invitational

Lewisburg, Pa.—After the conclusion of day one at the Bucknell Invitational, the Binghamton men’s swimming and diving team holds firm in fourth place, while the women’s squad currently is in sixth place out of 10 schools competing at Kinney Natatorium. Host Bucknell leads the field on both the men’s and women’s sides after Friday’s action.

The Bearcats had three winners on day one, highlighted by a thrilling first-place finish from Brian McKenna in the 50 free. His time of 20.58 is a personal-best for the sophomore standout and is the third fastest time in BU history. McKenna bested senior Shintaro Noguchi by .19 seconds, earning his fourth win of the 2013-14 campaign.

In the 200 IM, both Racquel Giner and Tommy Cummings won their respective heats in the ‘C’ final. Giner swam her final in a career-best time of 2:09.92, overtaking her previous best by .38 seconds, good enough for fifth on the program records chart. Cummings, a sophomore, also touched first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.27 His finals time was the ninth fastest on Friday, beating out 15 other swimmers at Kinney Natatorium.

Junior sprinter Caitlin Kelly had a terrific showing on Friday, setting a program record in the 50 free with a time of 23.61. Kelly was just beat out in the ‘A’ final by Delaware’s Morgan Whyte who clocked a time of 23.37. In addition to her record setting 50, Kelly was a part of two successful relay races in Bucknell. She anchored the 200 free to a fourth place finish alongside Corinne Zotter, Elle Anastasiou and Timea Toszer and also racked up a third place finish in the 400 medley.

Like the women, the men’s 400 medley relay team of Eric Farm, Ed Hausmann, Cummings and McKenna also produced a third place finish with a time of 3:25.02. Sophomore Andrew Duszynski continued to excel in the distance events, swimming to a third-place finish in the 500 free and junior diver Devin Zdanowski put forth the fourth highest score in the 3-M finals.

The Bucknell Invitational picks up competition once again on Saturday morning at 10 a.m., with finals taking place beginning at 6 p.m. from the campus of Bucknell University.
