CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Binghamton University’s freshman diver Devin Zdanowski was named America East Male Diver of the Week, as announced by the conference Tuesday afternoon. It is the first conference honor for a Bearcat in 2011 and Zdanowski is the first BU diver to win the award since Bob Nolte in February of 2010.
“Devin’s (Zdanowski) been an exciting addition to our diving corps,” head coach Sean Clark said. “His strength and focus are impressive for a freshman, and we’re proud to see him earn some recognition for his hard work. He still has some great potential to explore, and I know he’s not satisfied staying where he is.”
Last weekend, Binghamton headed down-state to take on Marist for their third head-to-head meeting in as many years. Though BU was swept by the Red Foxes, historic performances were put in on both sides, in particularly by Zdanowski. The first-year diver scored a 298.95 on the meter-board taking first place and setting a new Binghamton freshman record in the process. Zdanowski smashed the old record of 271.58 set by Ryan Graham in 2005.
In his first collegiate victory, the No. 2 ranked diver in New York State coming out of high school, also rocketed to second place all-time in program history. The same Ryan Graham whose freshman record Zdanowski broke, holds the all-time mark on the meter board with a score of 318.07 set in 2007.
Zdanowski followed up his record-breaking performance on the meter board with a second-place finish in the three-meter dive, scoring valuable points for BU and helping keep the meet within reach.
Binghamton is off for the next month-and-a-half until they host the University at Buffalo on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. in the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center.
