VESTAL, N.Y.—Sophomore outfielder Jake Thomas has been selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Northeast Region first team, the association announced on Tuesday. The honor means that Thomas was deemed one of the top three outfielders in the 39-team region, which includes teams from nine different conferences, including the BIG EAST and Atlantic-10.
Thomas, who ranked No. 2 in the nation in on-base percentage and led the America East in multiple offensive categories, is the lone position player from the conference to be honored on the first team. He also becomes Binghamton’s first position player to be named first-team all-region since 2007 (Matt Simek).
“An outstanding honor for an outstanding young man,” head coach Tim Sinicki said. “I am thrilled for Jake and for the fact that the coaches in the region recognized him for the type of season he had for our program. Jake plays the game the right way…all out, all the time. He’s a bit of a throwback when it comes to that style, but it sure is fun and a pleasure to watch.”
In leading the Bearcats to a conference title and NCAA berth in 2013, Thomas hit .371 - the highest mark among the nine first team all-region selections and 52nd in the country. He ranked among the nation’s leaders in batting average, walks and on-base percentage all spring and his .517 on-base mark is currently the second-highest in the country. Thomas made a very compelling case for America East Player of the Year honors after leading the league in average, slugging (.522), and on-base percentage. He also ranked second in runs (42) and third in RBI (37). In conference play, Thomas hit .416 and pushed his on-base percentage up to a staggering .546 - 64 points higher than the next-closest player.
He broke the school record for walks in a season (45) and on-base percentage and registered 17 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games.
In left field, Thomas had four assists and just two errors in 95 chances and showed the strength of his arm at the NCAA Regional in Raleigh. In BU’s game against No. 23 Ole Miss, Thomas threw out two baserunners - one at home and another at second.
Thomas also made history back on April 17 by blasting the first home run at the new facility - a fourth-inning solo shot over the right field wall against St. Bonaventure. He wound up with a team-high five home runs in 2013, third-most in the conference.
