VESTAL, N.Y.—Three Binghamton wrestlers appear in the first NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings, released by the NCAA Thursday afternoon.
Seniors Donnie Vinson (3rd at 149), Nate Schiedel (5th at 197) and Derek Steeley (T-27th at 133) have earned spots in the first of three rankings which will help determine NCAA berths.
Vinson, ranked No. 5 in this week’s InterMat poll, is positioned at No. 3 in the Coaches’ Panel, behind only Jordan Oliver of Oklahoma State and Jason Chamberlain of Boise State. Vinson is on the cusp of becoming the program’s all-time wins leader. He is 123-25 in his stellar four-year career and with his next win, Vinson will move past Josh Patterson (2006-10) into first place in career wins. Vinson is 24-1 this season, including a perfect 14-0 dual record.
Schiedel, ranked No. 6 in the InterMat poll, is No. 5 in the Coaches’ Panel. Since moving up to 197 pounds this season, the three-time NCAA qualifier has been dominant, rolling to a 21-2 record (14-0 duals).
Steeley has started to pick up steam at 133 pounds, where four CAA wrestlers have earned top-33 spots in a competitive weight class. Steeley, who captured a NYS collegiate title back in November, is 13-10 overall and is coming off a 3-0 performance at the CAA Duals this past weekend.
The final rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2013 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, held March 21-23 in Des Moines, Iowa. Wrestlers in each weight class are measured by winning percentage, rating percentage index (RPI) and coaches’ rankings to earn spots for the national tournament. The coaches’ rankings are compiled by a vote of coaches representing each qualifying tournament.
