Day One Recap

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton women’s track & field team earned a program-best runner-up finish at the America East Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which concluded on Sunday afternoon at the East Gym Track. The Bearcat men’s squad was fourth out of eight teams but sophomore Jesse Garn won the 1,500.

Head coach Mike Thompson and his staff of Annette Acuff, Natilee Dawkins and Gabe Fletcher was named the America East Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year for the first time. The quartet was previously named the men’s top staff in the conference following the 2011 America East Indoor Meet and the 2012 outdoor championships.

After placing a close third at last year’s outdoor meet and this year’s indoor championships, the Binghamton women finally claimed their first America East runner-up trophy. With Albany cruising to a repeat team title with 245 points, the Bearcats were able to outdistance third-place Vermont 136-109.5.

“I am so proud of our women’s team,” head coach Mike Thompson said. “They have come a long way. It took a near-perfect effort to get second place this weekend and nearly everyone we were counting on stepped up.”

Junior Alexis Murray placed second in the women’s triple jump with a distance of 39-8 ¾. Including yesterday’s second-place finish in the long jump and third-place finish in the javelin, she finished the meet with a team-best 22 points.

Senior Jessica Hennig was the runner up in the 400 (54.35) and anchored the third-place 4x400 relay team (3:47.87). Also in that relay group were junior Erika Kisel, who was eighth in the 400 (57.32), sophomore Ivory Taussig, who was fifth in both the 100 (12.23) and 200 (25.02) and junior Kathleen Klein. Taussig, Klein, Kisel and junior Alexx Baum were also third in the 4x100 relay (47.24).

Freshman Kierra Arthur was third in the 100 hurdles (14.76).

Garn, meanwhile, won his first conference title with a time of 3:44.76.  Later in the meet, he anchored the second-place 4x800 relay team, which included juniors Chris Fernandez, Raul Avalos and Ben Snodgrass with a time of 7:34.98. The men’s 4x400 team of seniors Mike Jennings and Casey Gilbert, sophomore Zaid Al-Doori and freshman Max Linden also placed second (3:16.40).

Elsewhere on the men’s side, senior Jeff Martinez was second in the 5,000 (14:54.16) and freshman Cameron Black was third in the 110 hurdles (14.92).

Both the men’s and women’s team’s finished the meet with six all-conference selections, which were awarded to the top three finishers in each event.
