CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A pair of Bearcats were honored by the America East with weekly accolades following Binghamton’s 2-0 weekend, the conference announced Monday afternoon. Senior Grace Vickers was named Player of the Week and junior Amanda Dettmann was honored as the Setter of the Week as the duo lead the Bearcats to sweeps of Hartford and Providence.
Vickers earned her first-ever America East weekly award while Dettmann earned her third Setter of the Week nomination of her career. The awards were the second and third of the season for Binghamton with freshman Allison Hovie being named Rookie of the Week on Oct. 28.
Vickers and Dettmann helped Binghamton elevate its conference record to .500 after securing straight set victories over Hartford and Providence less than 24 hours apart. The Bearcats disposed of the Hawks Friday evening before handling the Friars Saturday afternoon and did not drop a set in the process.
“Grace had a dominating weekend with her blocking and hitting,” head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. “This past weekend she took control of the net right away and go us off to fast starts in both matches. Grace works hard in every aspect of the game and has continued to improve throughout the season.”
Vickers had a strong weekend with 4.00 kills per set on an astounding .513 hitting percentage. Both figures ranked second among all America East players. The senior captain committed just four attack errors on 39 attempts in leading the Bearcats in kills against Hartford (11) and Providence (13). Vickers also delivered on the defensive side of the net compiling 1.83 blocks per set, which was tops in the conference over the weekend.
A first-team all-conference selection in 2012, Vickers is the only player in the league to rank among the top 10 in hitting percentage (1st), kills per set (4th) and blocks per set (6th).
“Amanda was the biggest reason for the success of our hitters this weekend,” Kiriyama proclaimed. “Amanda kept our team within the system with her hustle and consistently put up nice sets for our hitters. She has the grit of a champion and the determination to push through the tough times.”
Dettmann displayed why she was honored as the Co-Setter of the Year in 2012, handing out a conference-best 12.00 assists per set while guiding the Bearcats to a league-high .324 hitting percentage. Equally as important defensively, the second-year captain also delivered 2.17 digs per set.
The 2012 All-Championship Team performer is one of two setters in the America East to rank among the top five in assists per set (5th) and service aces per set (4th).
Binghamton heads into the final weekend in of the season in fifth place with a 6-6 America East record, two games behind fourth-place Albany. The Bearcats need to defeat UMass Lowell and first-place New Hampshire and have the Great Danes lose to both teams to advance to the America East Championship. Only the top four teams in the final conference standings qualify for the postseason tournament.
