VESTAL, N.Y.—The NCAA announced its final Coaches’ Panel and RPI Rankings and the qualifier allocations for the upcoming 2013 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship Thursday afternoon.
Binghamton’s two elite wrestlers, seniors Donnie Vinson and Nate Schiedel, continued to hold their top-5 positions. Vinson, a reigning All-American who has been among the top wrestlers at 149 pounds all season, is No. 4 in both the Panel and RPI. He is 27-1 this season and will defend his title at the CAA Championship in Boston on March 9.
Schiedel is positioned at No. 5 in the Coaches’ Panel Rankings and had the 18th toughest schedule in his weight class (RPI). He is 24-1 overall and like Vinson, is essentially assured of a return trip to the NCAA Championship.
The only other BU wrestler to appear in either ranking was junior 184-pound Cody Reed, who is No. 30 in the RPI but unranked in the Coaches’ Panel. Reed earned a wild-card berth into the 2012 NCAA Championship and is picking up momentum this season, having won six of his last seven matches.
The CAA was awarded 19 qualifying positions for the NCAA Championship, based on the number of ranked CAA wrestlers this season. The total is four less than the conference received last season. At the CAA Championship, the champion only will advance at 125 pounds, 165, 174 and 184. The top-two finishers at 149, 157 and heavyweight will receive NCAA berths. Three wrestlers each will gain NCAA entry at 133, 141 and 197.
On March 13, the NCAA will hand out its 40 at-large berths to round out each weight class at 33 for the NCAA Championship, held in Des Moines on March 21-23.
