VESTAL, N.Y.—Binghamton’s two elite wrestlers kept their top-5 status in the latest NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings, released by the NCAA Thursday afternoon along with the first Rating Percentage Index (RPI). The final rankings and RPI will be two of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine the qualifiers for the 2013 NCAA Championship, held in Des Moines on March 21-23.
Senior 149-pound Donnie Vinson is ranked No. 4 in the Coaches’ Panel and is No. 7 in the RPI. Senior 197-pound Nate Schiedel is No. 5 in the Coaches’ Panel and is positioned at No. 16 in the RPI. In addition, junior 184-pound Cody Reed moved into the RPI list at No. 33.
Vinson is 27-1 overall and slipped a notch from the first Coaches’ Panel despite going unbeaten in the last three weeks. He is 17-0 and on the verge of a perfect dual season (as is Schiedel) with one match remaining in the regular season (Feb. 21 at No. 17 Bloomsburg). Vinson is ranked No. 4 in the latest InterMat poll.
Schiedel is 24-2 overall and held his ground at No. 5 in the Coaches’ Panel. Like Vinson, he is 17-0 in duals with 11 of his wins resulting in bonus points. For the third straight week, Schiedel is No. 5 in the InterMat rankings.
Reed (14-13) is making a late-season push to return to the NCAA Championship. He has won three straight duals and his strength-of-schedule has resulted in a positioning at No. 33 in the RPI.
