Volleyball adds seven newcomers for 2011 season

The Binghamton volleyball program will welcome seven new members this fall. Six graduating seniors, including all-conference performers Michelle McDonough and Anna Lejina, left head coach Glenn Kiriyama with his largest void since coming to Binghamton in 1999.

Incoming freshmen Amanda Dettmann (Milwaukee, Wis./Divine Savior Holy Angels), Kristin Hovie (Neenah, Wis./Neenah), Emily Litwin (Williamsville, N.Y./Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart) and Jordan Snapp (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) have signed National Letters of Intent (NLI). Annelot Nieuwenhuis (Maumee, Ohio/Anthony Wayne), Alexa Zbytniewski (East Northport, N.Y./John H. Glenn) and Sacred Heart sophomore-transfer Shannon Bruno (Ardsley, N.Y./Ardsley/Sacred Heart) will join the Bearcats for the 2011 season as walk-ons.

“I am looking forward to working with each of the newcomers,” Kiriyama said. “We just had our largest graduating class, so each of them will be vital to our success this coming season. All of them have played club ball for many years against strong competition and bring a wealth of experience to their respective positions. The quality of the seven is exceptional and I expect that their contributions to the team will be plentiful this fall.”

Dettmann, a standout setter, is a three-year letterwinner and two-time captain. She earned Greater Metro all-conference honors three times and was named the Player of the Year in 2010. The two-time all-state selection led her team to a section championship and a state quarterfinals appearance in 2009. Dettmann also competed with the Milwaukee Sting Volleyball Club where she led her team to three national top-three finishes and was named to the all-tournament team in 2009. Just as accomplished off the court, Dettman earned high honor roll all four years of high school and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Hovie is a four-year starting outside hitter and two-time Fox Valley Association all-conference selection. She is the school’s all-time kills leader, totaling 335 terminations during her senior season. Hovie led her team to three straight sectional final appearances, winning a championship in 2008.

Litwin, a libero and four-year letterwinner, is a two-time first-team All-Catholic League selection. She was named Monsignor Martin League MVP in 2010 and led her team to two Catholic League championships, reaching the New York State finals in 2010. In 2008 and 2009 she was named second-team All-Western New York and in 2010 earned first-team honorable mention honors. Litwin is an honor roll student who also competed in softball.

Snapp is a three-year letterwinner and team MVP. The 6-foot-3 middle hitter led her team with 240 kills and a school-record 50 solo blocks in 2010. She was named to the Duneland Athletic Conference first-team in 2010 and is a member of the Dunes Volleyball Club.

Nieuwenhuis, an outside hitter originally from the Netherlands, is a two-year letterwinner and a second-team All-Northern Lakes League selection. Nieuwenhuis also earned first-team Northern Lakes All-Academic honors and was named a District Seven All-Star Scholar-Athlete. She was captain of her club team at the Premier Volleyball Academy and earned a State Board of Education Merit Award this past spring.

Zbytniewski, the second setter of the 2011 recruiting class, helped her team to four straight Long Island Championships. The four-year letterwinner is a three-time all-state selection and two-time League Seven Player of the Year. In 2007, she was a member of the New York Class B State Champions, advancing to the state tournament all four years.

Bruno will join the Bearcats after spending her freshman season at Sacred Heart. Bruno played four seasons of varsity volleyball at Ardsley while also competing in basketball and lacrosse. She was tabbed as an all-league selection her freshman and sophomore seasons and selected to the all-section team during her junior and senior years.

The seven newcomers will join seven returning letterwinners to give Kiriyama a 14-player roster for the 2011 season. Last season, the Bearcats finished second in the America East, making their seventh straight postseason appearance. Binghamton opens the season at the Mizzou Tiger Invitational on Aug. 26-27.
