VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton volleyball program has announced its 2012 recruiting class, as released by head coach Glenn Kiriyama. The Bearcats will welcome four newcomers to the team this fall, consisting of all incoming freshmen. “We are pleased to welcome a strong and experienced incoming class,” Kiriyama said.
Set to join the Binghamton program in 2012 are defensive specialist Alexandra Warner (Midland, Mich./Midland), middle hitters Shannon Kirkpatrick (Rochester, N.Y./Greece-Athena), and Megan Burgess (St. Petersburg, Fla./Canterbury School of Florida) and outside hitter Ashley Bowman (Secaucus, N.J./Paramus Catholic).
Warner is a three-year starter who was selected to the Saginaw Valley first team as a senior after leading her team to a Class A district title and Saginaw Valley League crown. She was a two-time all-region selection from her libero position setting the school record for digs with 435. Following her senior campaign she was named to the Midland and Saginaw News Dream Teams. Warner was a four-year honor roll student that graduated cum laude
“Alex (Warner) has solid back row skills and will be right in the mix with our other defensive specialists,” Kiriyama continued.
Kirkpatrick is a captain, two-time team MVP and four-year middle hitter standout for Greece-Athena High. The three-time All-Monroe County selection was named the Section V Division II Player of the Year. She was a two-time All-Greater Rochester selection and plays club ball for Paradigm Volleyball of Rochester. Kirkpatrick, also a basketball standout, was named Section V Class AA tournament MVP after leading her team to the title.
“Shannon (Kirkpatrick) has versatility as an attacker and blocker and will be utilized at different positions along the net,” Kiriyama identified.
Burgess is a five-year starter at middle hitter for Canterbury. She led her team to five straight district championships, two regional runner-ups and a regional championship during her career. The two-time team MVP assisted in leading her squad to a state final four appearance in 2010. Burgess, who also played basketball, was a member of the National and Spanish Honor Society.
“Megan (Burgess) comes from a top-ranked club team and will be counted on to bolster our front row hitting and blocking,” Kiriyama noted.
Bowman is a four-year outside hitter for Paramus Catholic. The two-time all-division selection was a team captain and all-county honoree during her senior season. A President’s Award recipient who is constantly involved in her community played her club volleyball for Club Essex North Black.
“Ashley (Bowman) has experience as an outside hitter and back row defender and will gives us added depth at these positions,” Kiriyama concluded.
The quartet joins a Binghamton program that missed the America East tournament for the first time in eight seasons. The two-time America East champions will look to bounce back in 2012 after graduating just two seniors. The Bearcats begin their season August 24 at the Boston College Tournament.
