CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The America East preseason volleyball poll was released Wednesday afternoon and Binghamton was predicted to finish fifth with 17 points. The voting was conducted by the seven conference head coaches, each of which was not allowed to vote for their own team.

UMBC, who fell to New Hampshire in the 2013 America East championship match, was voted first with 33 points. The Wildcats were a close second earning 30 points in the poll, while each program received three first place votes. Stony Brook rounded out the top three with 28 points and the final first place vote.

Completing the poll was Albany with 21 points, Binghamton, followed by Hartford (12) and second-year member UMass Lowell (6). Former associate member Providence is no longer competing in the America East Conference.

The top four teams in the conference standings at the end of the regular season will qualify for the 2014 America East Championship, which will take place at the home of the top seed on Nov. 21 and 22 or 22 and 23. The tournament champion will receive an automatic bid to the 2014 NCAA Championship. Binghamton and Albany have combined for the nine of the past 10 America East Tournament titles.

Following its third America East title in program history, the Bearcats failed to advance to the conference tournament for just the second time in the past 10 years. Binghamton started the 2014 season slow, but finished strong coming just two games short of the postseason, going 7-7 during America East play. The Bearcats finished the season with a 9-19 overall record.

Binghamton returns four starters to its 2014 unit, but will have to navigate a tough schedule after losing all-conference performers Grace Vickers and Xiomara Ortiz. The Bearcats will be led by four-year starting setter, Amanda Dettmann. The senior captain from Milwaukee, Wis. was the 2012 Co-Setter of the Year and a second-team all-conference selection.

The Bearcats begin their season on Aug. 29 in Los Angeles, Calif. at the Loyola Marymount Tournament against Pac-12 member and four-time national champion UCLA.
